The Early Decline Everyone Misses — And It Doesn’t Even Have a Name

Most people know sarcopenia—age-related loss of muscle mass.

Some clinicians now talk about dynapenia —loss of muscle strength.

Both matter. But here’s what the research keeps revealing:

Neither mass nor strength is the earliest or most reliable predictor of mobility loss or falls.

The real early-warning sign?

Power—the ability to generate force (or strength) quickly.

Power declines 2–5x faster than strength.

When the body’s “quick-movement” system loses power, balance and reaction time slip first—showing up in the small moments, like taking longer to get out of a chair or steady your feet.

And here’s the remarkable part:

Technically, the correct parallel term for age-related power loss would be potentiapenia—the counterpart to sarcopenia and dynapenia. But the field has never adopted a name for it.

The single most important sign of early decline isn’t just overlooked— it literally isn’t named.

And maybe that’s why we often don’t screen for it…even though it’s the most POWERful predictor of future mobility loss and falls.

The issue isn’t mass alone. And it isn’t just strength. It’s the loss of rapid, reactive movement—the first layer of invisible decline.
