RISE UP: Combating Couch Acquired Frailty

FRAILTY STATS:

  • *higher risk for hospitalization
  • *higher risk of falls
  • *higher risk to develop dementia
  • *require caregiver support

We talk a lot about Hospital Acquired Frailty–it’s an important subject that affects a lot of seniors.

But there’s another condition that often is a precursor to this…COUCH ACQUIRED FRAILTY

It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but creates an image we can all relate to and instantly recongizable.

We see this a lot in homes and senior living communities.

Just like in the hospitals, muscle strength is a crucial component…muscle is a SAFEGUARD to health.

Muscle is not only useful for the obvious stuff–standing, walking, household chores, playing with grandkids, etc…

It also positively impacts cognition, our immune system, our urinary system, heart health, and on and on.

There are a ton of factors outside of low motivation for Couch Acquired Frailty (fear avoidance, nutrition, mitochondrial dysfunction, etc.), and many levers we can pull to impact it.

Early intervention for those starting to struggle can dramatically reduce these risk factors and improve the quality of life for them and their loved ones.
