Protect the Mind, Prevent the Fall
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Falls are responsible for 81% of traumatic brain injuries among seniors. Those over 75 years of age have the highest risk of TBI-related hospitalizations and deaths.
Risk Factors for TBIs in Seniors:
1. Balance and Mobility Issues: Reduced strength, poor balance, and slowed reflexes increase fall risk.
2. Medications: Certain medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or low blood pressure, contributing to falls.
3. Chronic Health Conditions: Conditions like osteoporosis, arthritis, and neurological disorders raise the likelihood of injury.
4. Cognitive Decline: Seniors with dementia or even mild cognitive impairment are at a higher risk for TBIs.
Long-Term Effects on Seniors with TBIs:
1. Physical Effects: These can include difficulty walking/balancing, chronic pain, increased risk for future falls and some experience seizures.
2. Cognitive Effects: Seniors can experience difficulty with memory, concentration, problem-solving, slower processing and increased risk of developing dementia.
3. Emotional and Psychological Effects: Other challenges include emotional regulation and mood swings, agitation, impulsivity, reduced confidence and possible isolation.
Rehabilitation and Recovery
Recovery for seniors can be slower, but rehabilitation can significantly improve outcomes. Physical Therapy can aid in regaining strength and balance. Occupational Therapy can help in relearning daily tasks. Speech Therapy can help improve cognition and communication.
