Muscle is a Safeguard to Health

Physical inactivity has been shown to be associated with many health problems in older individuals. The lack of exercise contributes to systemic inflammation and is a major contributor of chronic disease. The results of this include reduced independence, impaired immune function, reduced mobility, declines in cognition, and early mortality.

A 2023 study conducted by Kenneth Manning, et al., showed dramatic changes in the 2 groups (sedentary and physically active) studied over the course of 12 months.

3 of the best predictors of frailty demonstrated the improvement with exercise, but also the speed of decline if sedentary

  1. The distance you can walk in 6 minutes
  2. The number of times you can stand up and sit back down in 30 seconds
  3. The time it takes to stand from a chair walk 8 feet and turn around and return to sitting.

While the study focused on measuring the physical aspects, we know that there are systemic effects of this as well.
