May: Arthritis Awareness Month
This is a condition that affects over 58 million Americans. While many still believe arthritis is simply a “wear and tear” disease, modern science tells a more complex story.
Arthritis, especially osteoarthritis, is increasingly understood as a metabolic and inflammatory disease. While joint overuse and injuries can certainly contribute, the real drivers often lie beneath the surface — in the body’s internal chemistry.
Excess body fat, especially visceral fat, releases inflammatory substances called adipokines. These promote chronic low-grade inflammation that damages cartilage, accelerates joint degeneration, and impairs repair.
Additionally, conditions like insulin resistance, poor mitochondrial function, and an unhealthy gut can all contribute to the development and progression of arthritis — even in non–weight-bearing joints.
Key Takeaways:
* Arthritis is more than just age or overuse — it’s also influenced by metabolic health.
* Obesity and insulin resistance increase inflammation, worsening joint damage.
* Gut health, diet, and mitochondrial function all play roles in joint integrity.
* Prevention and treatment go beyond pain relief — they include improving whole-body health.
This month, we encourage you to think holistically. A balanced diet, regular low-impact exercise, and strategies to reduce inflammation can not only ease arthritis symptoms — they may help prevent it altogether.
