Hospital Acquired Frailty:
A precipitous multi-system decline due to immobility while in a hospital that is often preventable.
Motion is Life
Frailty Tip Sheet
Why is consistent mobility crucial?
- Muscle activity impacts far more than just our ability to move….it’s a SAFEGUARD
- Immobilized patients not only experience functional declines, but medical conditions worsen as well.
What are the effects of immobility?
- Muscle weakness: As much as 3-5%loss of strength each day
- Bone weakness: Bone mass decreases as much as 50x faster
- Dependence: 5x more likely to be admitted to care home
- Risk of infection: Higher risk of urinery tract, and other infections
- Cognition: Cognitive impairment risks doubles
- Wounds: 70% of older patients develop pressure ulcers in 2 weeks
- Lung dysfunctions: Increased risk of reduced lung capacity and pneumonia
- Cardiovascular: Blood pressure challenges and overworked heart since muscles don’t help with circulation
Immobility occurs at home too. Muscle strength doesn’t just impact our body’s ability to move… it affects many other crucial systems as well.
