Better Brain Health Starts with Simple Steps
New study identified 17 shared risk factors for Stroke, Dementia, and Depression.
Age-related brain diseases like stroke, dementia, and late-life depression are more connected than we once thought—but the good news is that many of their risks are preventable.
In a new systematic review published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, researchers from Mass General Brigham identified 17 modifiable risk factors that are shared by at least two of these conditions. That means by addressing just one of these areas— like blood pressure, sleep, or stress—you can lower your risk for multiple diseases at once.
Key findings included:
| Risk | Effect |
|---|---|
| High Blood Pressure | major contributor to all 3 |
| Kidney Disease | strong impact on all 3 |
| Alcohol Use | associated with brain health decline |
| Poor Diet (high cholesterol and glucose) | contributes to multiple brain diseases |
| Low Physical AND Cognitive Activity | associated with high risk |
| Lack of Purpose in Life and social engagement | strong psychological contributor |
| Chronic Stress | significant impact on brain health |
This research also supports the updated Brain Care Score, a tool that helps individuals measure and improve their brain health.
“Dementia, stroke and late-life depression are connected, and intertwined. If you develop one of them, there’s a substantial chance you may develop another in the future. Preventing disease can be simple,” said Dr. Jonathan Rosand of MGH. “Many of the most common diseases share the same risk factors.
